Osteoporotic fractures are a major worldwide epidemic. Worldwide, age-standardized rates in hip fracture vary >200-fold in women and >140-fold in men when comparing incidence rates in the highest vs lowest country. Median age standardized rates are highest in North America and Europe followed by Asia, Middle East, Oceania, Latin America, and Africa. Vitamin D and bone health in the older patient

Vitamin D deficiency is common in aging people and is associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism, bone loss, osteoporosis and fractures in epidemiological studies. Vitamin D3 is produced in the skin through u.v. irradiation of the sun in spring and summer, and it can also be obtained from food, especially fatty fish, such as herring or mackerel.
