Bone mineral density and trabecular bone score in ukrainian women with obesity

The aim of this study was to evaluate the bone mineral density (BMD), trabecular bone score (TBS) in the Ukrainian women with obesity.

Materials and methods: 1025 women aged 40–89 years (mean age – 62.7±9.7 yrs; mean height – 161.4±6.2 cm; mean weight – 73.9±13.8 kg, body mass index – 28.4±5.1 kg/m2) were examined. The women were divided into the following groups depending on their body mass index: A – 360 women with obesity, BMI≧30 kg/m2 (mean age – 64.0±8.9 yrs; mean body mass index – 33.9±3.5 kg/m2), B – 665 women without obesity, BMI<30 kg/m2 (mean age – 62.0±10.0 yrs; body mass index – 25.4±2.8 kg/m2). BMD was measured by the DXA method (Prodigy, GEHC Lunar, Madison, WI, USA). TBS (L1-L4) was assessed by means of TBS iNsight® software installed on our DXA machine (Med-Imaps, Pessac, France).

Results: We have found that obese women have a significantly higher BMD of lumbar spine (A – 1.114±0.197 g/cm2, B – 0.994±0.194 g/cm2), femoral neck (A – 0.873±0.137 g/cm2, B – 0.822±0.136 g/cm2), total body (A – 1.123±0.108 g/cm2, B – 1.037±0.111 g/cm2) and ultradistal forearm (A – 0.429±0.087 g/cm2, B – 0.371±0.082 g/cm2) in comparison with women without obesity. When analyzing their BMD depending on age, we determined that the BMDs of lumbar spine, femoral neck and total body significantly differ in the women of age groups 40–49, 50–59, 60–69 and 70–79 yrs (P<0.05). At the same time, in the women aged 80–89 yrs the BMD of lumbar spine (P=0.09), femoral neck (P=0.22) and total body (P=0.06) did not differ significantly. The BMD of ultradistal forearm was significantly higher in the women of all age groups (P<0.05). TBS (L1-L4) was not significantly different in obese women compared with women without obesity in all age groups.

Conclusion: Obese women have a significantly higher BMD at all measured sites compared with women without obesity. TBS (L1-L4) did not significantly differ in the examined women.
